Clubs 2022-2023

African Dance Club with Ms. Pion

The club meets on Tuesdays. It is a beginner level dance club where students learn traditional moves to African drum rhythms.

Anime Club with Ms. Charles and Ms. Shim

Held bi-weekly on Fridays 2:30-3:30 in the Library. We appreciate and enjoy all facets of East Asian culture. This includes Japanese animation, anime, video games, Japanese and Korean dramas, music, cuisine, cultural practices, and more. Students will communicate with fellow Otaku classmates.

This is a mental health and wellness club, which offers support, education, and techniques to help others “Be Happy”. We explore music, art, crafts, fitness, healthy lifestyles, and many other ways to promote positive mental health. We meet most Wednesdays after school in room 120. 

Students of Fuel Up to Play 60 with Ms. Rotolo and Ms. Pion

Advisors Mrs. Pion and Mrs. Rotolo, 2:30-3:30 Fuel UP to Play 60 is wellness initiative supported by the NFL and American Dairy Council. Students join and advocate for 60 minutes of exercise and healthy eating. Activities include 5K teens, FLAG football, and various activities.

GARDENING CLUB students with  Mrs. Alexander

Club meets from 2:30- 3:30 in our garden in front of EMS. Pretty trees, pretty flowers, planting bulbs, and raking leaves. Interested in Honor Society Service Hours? Let’s get together and keep our EMS clean and thriving. If interested there will be a sign-up sheet in room 249 or send a TEAMS chat to @Barbara E. Alexander.

GIRLS INC students  with  Ms. Adler, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. DeVita,

Held on Mondays 2:45-4:45 on the Stage, inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold by holding meetings to discuss different topics and have fun! We have a variety of guest speakers throughout the year exclusively for GIRLS INC. members and there will be an end of the year field trip.

Students are packaging food for Helping Hands with Ms. Smith and Ms. Correa Bustos

Helping hands stays every other week to be helpful to our school and community in various ways. We pre-bag food for our local food program, write holiday cards to be distributed to local nursing homes, spread kindness and awareness for various events, and many other opportunities to help support our school and community.  It runs in room 247 every other Wednesday. We have been working with both Pronto and Island Harvest to keep our students fed using the "weekend food program."

From 2:30- 5:00 in Room 215.  In mechanics club we learn how the gas engine works and disassemble and reassemble our own motors. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are all welcome.

LEADERS OF THE FUTURE with Mr. Duprey

Held on Mondays 2:40-3:40 in Room 126.  Students will have discussions and engage in activities focused on becoming the leaders of their generation. There are also community service projects. If you’re looking for a chance to meet new people and learn new skills this is the club for you!

Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 in the Library If you love to read, watch movies, crafting, decorating, or just love going to the library then this club is for you! This club will also offer community service hours for honor society students who would like to participate.

Mad Science Club students with Ms. Charles

Held on Wednesdays or Thursday 2:30-3:30 in Room 107. At the mad science club, we learn how to design things in 3 dimensions using TinkerCad, we will compete in the science Olympiad competition, and the MagLev competition held at Brookhaven National Lab in March. This club is for students interested in science competitions, research, experiments, and the occasional science board game. Students will be expected to bring their laptops & chargers with an external mouse for computer aided design.

Advisors Alexandra Santora (8th grade), Lissette Marmol (7th grade), Michelle Maier (6th grade), Amy McGlone (Legos) is a program designed to complement the regular math curriculum that we have at our school. During this program, students will meet in small groups with teachers to inspire and empower students to succeed. Students will also receive targeted support in mathematics while having fun and engaging in friendly competition. In addition, they will use iReady Math as a tool to identify areas of need and complete differentiated lessons with the support of their Math Academy teacher.

The Lighthouse Mural Club is working to make permanent displays of the ideals of the 7 Habits around the School.  The student Leaders in this club design and carry out the mural projects themselves.  

NATIONAL Junior Honor Society members with advisors

The NJHS is a student run organization that recognizes student’s service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Members are required to maintain at least an 85-grade point average in all core subjects as well as an overall cumulative average of 85 or better. They must complete at least 20 service hours and maintain high standards of conduct at EMS. These students are looked upon as student leaders by school staff and peers. Membership is an honor and responsibility, and members contribute to many of the projects sponsored by the school.

Technology Room Students help design, build, shape, paint etc. to complete the Homecoming Day Parade float. At the parade, all the floats from the middle schools and the Freshman Center compete for best float of the year.

Peer Tutoring with Honor Society Students run by Ms. McCullough

Honor Society peer leaders tutor students in need of help in math (under teacher supervision) after school on Thursdays in Room 121.

Saturdays SCCC Selden STEP is an enrichment program in the area of STEM that prepares students for college.  Ms. Pion is the advisor. 

Students with Advisors from the Student Lighthouse Club

Mondays 2:30-3:30 or 5:00 in Room 104 Visionary student leaders will learn the 7 habits of successful teens. They will plan events and strategies to integrate the 7 habits into our school culture. Student will spread positivity, support, and benefits of the 7 habits to peers.

Advisors Amy McGlone, Michael McGinn, Ashley Galvin and Angie  Martinez encourage students to use their journalism, research, directing, video production, graphic design, interviewing and video editing skills. Students work both in front of the camera and behind the scenes to create news videos monthly that report the amazing things happening at East Middle School. The club meets the first and third Thursday of each month until 3:30.

The club is held in Room 20.  Students will help with developing and organizing the EMS yearbook. Students who are interested in media, photography, editing and publishing should apply.

YES Program with Mr. Millman and students

Held everyday 2:30-5:30 in the Large Cafeteria.  The YES (Islip Town Youth and Enrichment Services) program provides students a safe environment afterschool. Snacks, games, and gym time are offered. Students will do homework and/or study for the first portion of the evening. Parents must pick up by 5:30pm.

Youth and Government Club with Ms. McNamara and Mr. Breihof

Held on Mondays in Room 122.  In this club students will obtain comprehensive knowledge of the NYS Legislature. Students will study current issues and proposed mock bills during a live re-enactment of a legislative proceeding in Albany while in the actual NYS Assembly and NYS Senate chambers.

This club was created to build student leaders who work behind the scenes for the annual EMS Talks event. They interview presenters to create their biographies, design posters and social media posts, develop scripts for videos and presentations and continue to collaborate with their peers to make the event more successful. We meet Wednesdays after school until 3:30 in room 126.

Student council members

Student Council representatives are the leaders in the building. Classroom representatives are elected during their Social Studies class. At-large members are also welcomed to attend meetings. The leadership votes on and plans events for the school.

·      JAZZ BAND: Mr. Cromwell , Wednesdays 2:30- 3:30 on the Stage Jazz band is a great place to improve your musicianship once a week after school. We perform several concerts throughout the year including performances during the school day and in the evening. Jazz band is open primarily to 8th grade band students, but we also have piano, guitar, bass, and drums.

 

·      TALENT SHOW: Mrs. Lewis, as announced Do you sing, dance, tell jokes, play an instrument? Or would you like to help out backstage or open/close the curtains? There’s a place for everyone!!

 

·      FRIENDSHIP CLUB: Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Greaves, Mondays 2:30-3:30 in Room 217 The Friendship Club at East Middle School welcomes everybody who would like to meet new people. We encourage kindness and acceptance as we play games, do activities, and help with school projects. Through these experiences, you will meet other kids just like you.

·      DRAMA CLUB: Mary Lewis, Dione McMahon, Sabrina Greaves, Fridays 2:30-5:00 Room 203.  Offer an arena for actors and stage crew to work towards creating and performing a show in the Spring.

 

·      MY BROTHER’S KEEPER: Stevenson Carrera Flores
